Annual Famine Commemoration
Saturday, 26 September, 2015 - 12:30 - 16:00
Between August and early October, Newry, Mourne and Down District Council have hosted a commemoration of the Irish Potato Famine which happened between 1845 and 1849.
Many Irish people perished and many more emigrated and it is, of course, very important to recognise this particular watershed in irish history.
Libraries, museums, arts centres and schools alike are playing host to a series of events to mark the commemoration, although Saturday September 26th will see the official ceremony take place at Albert Basin in Newry at 12.30pm.
The event will include musical performamces, poetry readings, a maritime event and the unveiling of an historical plaque.
This event sounds like a 'must' for local people with an interest in history.
