The Macular Society is a national charity for anyone affected by macular conditions. Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of sight loss in the developed world. In the UK, over 500,000 people are affected. About half are registered as visually impaired. We are all living longer so the number of people affected by AMD is increasing.
Being diagnosed with macular disease can be distressing and worrying but, with the right information and support, people can cope very well. We offer information and support while we fund research to find a cure so that one day we can overcome macular disease. Our services include Support Groups, Befriending, Skills for Seeing and Counselling while our Helpline provides information to people with macular disease across Northern Ireland.
With the generous donations of our members and all of our supporters, our services are free to anyone in Northern Ireland. Through a generous grant for the Big Lottery Fund we are developing peer support groups across Northern Ireland. For further information on any of our services please contact 0300 3030 111 or 028 91 466305.
